Comparing Shipping Costs and Airline Check-in Costs

Here's the question: have you tried to save some dollars when traveling frequently between the U.S. and Panama, and deciding you could gradually bring belongings into Panama? So, each time you fly down to Panama, might it be cheaper to check in a bag that would carry as much as if you had shipped a medium-size box around 12" x 19" x 10"? If you knew that checked-in bag would cost you $30 on say Spirit to Panama City, could you ship it ground rate or cheaper than that to Panama? Any first-hand experience appreciated here. This is not for someone who shipped large household items and furniture, just personal belongings and smaller office equipment, and taking my time over several trips back and forth.
