Drivers License Question

My husband and I will be moving to Panama in mid February. We are NOT planning on getting a Panamanian Drivers license however we were now wondering how we would rent a vehicle when we go back to the US to visit family & friends. Of course we would still have our US drivers license, but if we have an accident while back home how would that be handled? Someone mentioned getting an international drivers license but from what I have seen is that you have to be living in the US.
