Friendliness in shops

Hi,

While visiting Panama, I found that the people were essentially always friendly, sometimes smiling, usually neutral and almost never in bad mood.

But in the shops, it seemed to me that on average the vendors were maybe less friendly than the Panamanians in the streets. Even toward other locals. At least, I met several vendors that looked pretty unhappy.

In Europe, the vendors are usually friendly because this is part of their job, and they are much more friendly than the people in the streets. So I was surprised. Any explanation?
