This is my first post. I am starting to research possible locations to retire abroad. I currently live in Michigan and just got done using the snow blower. Thoughts of a more pleasant climate are at the front of my mind right now as you all might imagine.
My dad and stepmom retired several years ago and moved from Washington State to Cayambe Ecuador. My wife and I visited them in 2016. I went down again on my own last November to help celebrate my dad's 80th birthday. We really enjoy birdwatching and did some birding both trips.
My wife is not too enthused by what she saw in Ecuador. I am much more willing to continue to consider Ecuador as an option but I am also researching other countries such as the Dominican Republic (we plan to go there in March for the first time), Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia.
Some big criteria for us include a good area for birding (or not too far away), good climate (not too rainy or hot or humid), safe, good value on property etc, hopefully at least some other expats in the area, smaller community (we are not big city people).
Boquete sounds pretty good but from what I have found it looks too rainy to be ideal. I found a website that says it gets 124" per year.
Cerro Punto gets less at 90" but is probably cooler than ideal for us.
Altos del Maria looks quite interesting but I haven't been able to find much info regarding climate since it is not a city.
Anyway I look forward to learning more about Panama and other potential countries.
Maybe I should have chosen the username of Goldilocks as I am looking for the "just right" location (as I am sure the rest of you are/were).
