Well it’s no surprise that several hundred people have been sickened by a serious bacterial outbreak from the water in Boquete. Today there was a public health hazard warning broadcasted all over the local radio stations and probably the local TV networks although I haven’t watched TV today however I was at my dentist’s office which is collocated in a hospital and there were around 18 individuals mostly North American who were trying to seek medical attention for what was described as intoxication from unsafe water IN BOQUETE.
This was just the one hospital that I happen to be in at the time and one could only speculate about many people were flooding the rest of the local hospitals who may have fallen ill from this increasingly common water quality issue in Boquete. It’s such a shame that the vested gringos in Boquete will never talk about this long term health hazard that mostly affects tourist as they are usually unaware of the dangers of consuming water in Boquete. And to a lesser degree this problem affects permanent residence but most of them understand the threats posed by the water and purchase bottled water. Understandably most of permanent residence who are concerned have elaborate water filtrations system out of necessity however many of the rental units in town aren’t equipped with this type of expensive filtration equipment which unjustly endangers the occupants.
If landlords aren’t willing (and most aren’t) to invest the large amounts of capital needed to properly equip their rental units with adequate water filtration systems then you as the consumer should look elsewhere before you too end up in line at a local hospital seeking medical attention, not a nice way to spend your vacation!!
Also be mindful that all the restaurants in Boquete rely on this same source of contaminated water to cook their food, do you think they’re going to warn their customer about the persistent water problem or this latest bacterial outbreak?
No matter how marvelous and picturesque people want to describe Boquete never forget that safe drinking water is a basic need and unfortunately Boquete gets a grade of “F“
Come see Panama but stay away from Boquete.
