Leaving Panama

My husband and I want to come to Panama from the US with 2 cats. Our intent is to stay on our passport for 6 months. If we want to stay longer, how long do you have to stay out of the country before re-entering?
I understand we have to be prepared to show a ticket leaving the country. We don't went to subject our cats to the travel to.the border if we can return within a day.
Our other option would be to apply for pensionado status as long as the requirements are met.
