Passport renewal

I have dual citizenship, British and U.S. my British passport needs to be renewed and I am now in the process of doing the online renewal which I think is great and seems very straight forward. Discovering this option I checked out the U.S. site as I need to renew this passport within a year, and see it is still snail mail and U.S. embassy visit for expats such myself.
I’m wondering how many other countries have adopted online renewals and why can’t everyone update to the technology of our time?
