Travelling with Jewelry

A first world problem here, if anyone has any ideas at all for me.

I've gotten rid of nearly all my belongings since we plan to move out of the US indefinitely. However, my one sticking point is that I have a good amount of nice jewelry that has both monetary and sentimental value, even after getting rid of my less favorite pieces.

Travelling around with it doesn't seem all that smart but I don't want to leave it here in the US because I might not come back here.

I also worry that it might exceed the value you're supposed to bring to Panama, though what used jewelry is worth is debatable. I guess my husband could claim half of it, if the topic of its value came up?

I thought about putting it in a safe deposit box in Panama. But first, which bank should I trust with it?

Also, a whole lot of it is various pearl pieces, which you're not even supposed to put in a safe deposit box because the lack of moisture in the air can damage the pearls.

Leaving them at the various places we stay seems risky, too.

And even wearing it, in a country with a lot of very poor people seems like asking for trouble and also just not very nice.

So, I'm kind of stumped. Any ideas?
