Texting to cell in panama from US

My Att cell phone service from Atlanta ( area code 770 ) allows me to text Panama at no charge, and my friend in Panama can text me back at no charge or limit.

When I changed my number to area code 470 she was still able to receive my texts but unable to respond. She called her provider and they were of no help.

Does anyone know what may have happened?
