With an investment of $ 25 million, Panama and Costa Rica inaugurated the new bi-national bridge over the Sixaola River, a route that will allow the economic and commercial activity of this border area between the two countries to be strengthened.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Foreign Ministers of Panama, Erika Mouynes and of Costa Rica, Rodolfo Solano; the Ministers of Public Works Rafael Sabonge (Panama) and Rodolfo Méndez Mata (Costa Rica), the Minister of Public Security of Panama, Juan Manuel Pino; as well as Maximiliano Reyes Zúñiga, Undersecretary of Foreign Relations for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Mexican States.
The total investment for this work was around $ 25 million, of which $ 10 million were contributed by the Mesoamerican Fund-Government of Mexico, and the governments of Costa Rica and Panama allocated $ 7.5 million each.
Rafael Sabong the Minister of Public Works (MOP) said that it is a work of 260 meters that will improve road connectivity and human mobility, since it has sidewalks for pedestrians and bicycle paths; it will also allow the transportation of merchandise between Panama and Costa Rica.
The minister said that this work is estimated to benefit around 15,000 people from the towns of Sixaola and Guabito and more than 150,000 people who cross this bridge each year.
While the Minister of Public Works and Transportation of Costa Rica, Rodolfo Méndez Mata , highlighted the importance of this work for the mobility of goods, not only in Costa Rica and Panama, but for the entire Mesoamerican region.
The project manager is the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). And the construction company was the Sixaola Binational Consortium, made up of the company Meco, SA, with the participation of the Mexican companies Cal & Mayor and associates, and Mexpresa.
