Electricity

I'm new so forgive me if the posts I make over the next few months seem redundant, self explanatory or just plain "dumb"!
We are just starting to look at our options for our retirement years and have narrowed our choices to just a few, but they're all very different.
One of the questions I have about Panama and Mexico for that matter, is if electricity is one of the biggest residential expenses, why don't people utilize solar energy as an obvious option? I am considering bringing our Tesla or buying one when we get where we're going.
It seems like a no brainer, but I'm sure there is a reason, but I haven't seen an explanation.
