I am on International Living's mailing list so almost everyday i receive information from them advocating the benefits of having two passports. Their argument is that as a kind of insurance you need more than one citizenship. That perhaps some situation would occur that would require you to need a second citizenship to fall back on. I have been a citizen of both Panama and the US for the past 8 years. So far the only benefit I have received is being able to get my wife from the Dominican Republic residency in Panama based on her being married to me a Panamanian citizen. In my own case I applied for citizenship here in Panama because I planned to stay here permanently. It was not because I thought I needed two citizenships. I might apply for a third citizenship if Scotland ever becomes independent but I am not interested in UK citizenship. It is because my dad was born in Scotland. I am wondering what other people think about the need or benefit of dual nationality. The idea of having dual nationality seems to be heavily promoted on the internet especially by International Living.
