A couple of years ago there was talk of building a high-speed rail line from Panama City to David and perhaps all the way to Paso Canoas.
A Chinese company did a feasibility study and estimated the cost at $4.1 bn.
Did the virus kill this project or is it still a possibility?
I’m not sure if I like the idea or not. I can see some benefits but I’m a little nervous about unintended consequences.
I expect that property values in David would rise and maybe the cost of consumer goods would fall.
It would be possible for people to live in David and work in Panama City, depending on the cost of a train ticket.
If the trains carry cargo as well as passengers maybe farmers in Chiriquí could get more profit for the produce they sell in the city. Or not, depending on freight rates.
On the other hand, areas that are consumed by suburban sprawl might end up being too expensive to farm.
