Bocos Del Toro -> Boquete

We are planning our trip to Panama in late June. We are spending a few days in Panama City then heading to Bocas Del Toro for a handful of days. From there we want to make our way to Boquete but wondering what the best way is to do that. Looks like all the flights require going all the way back to Panama City and then back to David. I'm thinking it might be more fun and interesting to drive. Is the drive from Almirante to Boquete safe? Also, is Changuinola the best place to rent a car when returning from the islands of Bocas Del Toro? Thanks!
