Traveler's Checks

Getting ready for my trip to Panama next month, I was looking into traveler's checks. (Yes, I know they're old fashioned and I can just use the ATM everywhere, but having had all kinds of things go wrong with that in past international travel, I prefer to have a backup plan.)

Looking at the AmEx site for traveler's checks, it appears they aren't accepted anywhere in Panama. This seems strange, so I thought I'd ask folks here: 1) Are traveler's checks accepted in Panama and if so what banks? 2) If not, any other (not plastic card based) recommendations besides just bringing a bunch of cash?
