Black Sand?

When I look at photos of various beaches in Panama, or zoom in with google earth, it looks like the beaches are a dirty mix of brown and black sand and the water looks like it has a large amount of sediment in it.

Satellite photos of rivers show them to be brown, indicating large sediment content (runoff from rain?)

Is that the case, or are do the beaches and water have the aura of being clean?
