Has anyone had a heart operation, whether a simple stent or a more complex procedure, in a public or private hospital in David who can share their experience?
I ask because I'm getting the sense that a lot of private hospitals in Panama aren't able to do much more than administer CPR and EKGs, so people with time to plan either go to a hospital in Panama City or outside the country for more major treatment. (The hospitals' websites naturally never tell you what they can't do, only what they can do.) If true, it's possible that the public hospitals are actually better at things like heart surgery, simply their patients rarely have the financial resources to go elsewhere, and the hospitals are forced to learn to perform the surgeries as best they can.
But I don't know any of this for a fact, and would like to learn from those with knowledge or experiences.
The issue here isn't only hoping to survive "the big one," but also arranging health coverage in Panama. For those of us with covered healthcare in another country (such as Medicare in the US), it doesn't make much sense for us to have extensive coverage in David if we have to travel to Panama City to use it. We might as well go to the country where we're covered. On the other hand, if extensive healthcare services such as heart surgeries are available in David, it can make sense to have extensive coverage there.
Thanks.
