Driving to Panama

I obtained my Permanent Residency for Panama. I've been planning on driving solo to Panama from Colorado. This is preferred over flying because I have 2 large dogs, and I'd like to have my truck in Panama. I have traveled in Central America a little and watched some YouTube videos made by people who made the drive I anticipate making. They report that the experience was most enjoyable and safe, and that they wished they'd taken more time, but I'm still nervous and not sure about this. My Spanish is not strong and crossing borders, finding hotels that allow dogs, and avoiding hotspots where security may be a problem are concerns, Any resource suggestions would be appreciated.
