personal effects

There seems to be conflicting guidance on importantion of personal effects. What is allowed and what isn't? Furniture, books, musical instruments, electrical equipment? One site suggested I have to photograph all electrical devices, note their serial numbers and supply invoices for their purchase?! Any help gratefully accepted... Dave :)
