Self-employed artist

Hi,
I am an artist living here in the U.S. looking for a bit of advice on moving to Spain. I have been reading a book on living and working in Spain and I noticed it can be quite complicated, and expensive for a self-employed person to move to Spain.
My rough uneducated plan was to rely on my Portrait work and my gallery representations in the states and abroad for my income. I'm not sure what kind of visa if any, I could apply for .
If anyone has any thoughts or advice, I would be most appreciative.
