Madrid Neighborhood Advice

My family and I are planning on moving to Madrid for 6 months, beginning January '05. We have an opportunity to get an apartment on Plaza de la Paja. Can anyone tell us about the neighborhood around there in terms of noise, traffic, partying, crime, etc.? How does it compare to, let's say, the hustle and bustle of Puerta del Sol?
