Rent/Buy a Home in Madrid

My husband and I are going to relocate to Madrid early next year and we are looking to rent and then buy a home in Madrid (northern part). Just from the Internet search that we conducted so far, we noticed that the rents in Madrid are quite pricy. For an 100 square meter apartment one can expect to pay EUR 1,000/month.

Does anybody know any nice rentals/chalets/houses in the northern part of Madrid? Or could anybody recommend other areas?
