Journalist seeking Madrid cost-cutting tips

I'm a freelance travel writer doing a piece for The Washington Post on cost-cutting tips for Europe's most expensive cities. I'd appreciate any very specific tips on Madrid -- lodging, eating, sightseeing and local transportation. Examples: Tapas and wine at the bar are cheaper than ordering at a table. The Prado is free on Sundays.
