Barcelona or Mallorca?

I am in the stages of planning a possible move to Spain for a year with my teenage son. I would like suggestions for family-oriented (possibly ex-pat enclaves) but interesting neighbourhoods in Barcelona. I am also considering Mallorca - in a non-touristy but friendly area ... any suggestions? Guidance?
