Spain 1st visit

Hi ,
I will be coming to Spain for a couple of weeks in Sept.
Flying into Barcelona and then want to go down the coast to Valencia. Should I take the train to travel or renting a car and driving would be more interesting? I do like cruising thru smaller towns and getting the feel for regular life instead of tourist stuff. Any suggestions would help. Also, any suggestions for a nice hotel (4star) near the center of everything in Barcelona.
