Thinking about possibly retiring to Spain - Costa Blanca North

Hello, we have bee based in Ireland for 7 months and have been looking for "our retirement cottage" but the real estate in Ireland and weather have been a nightmare so we are changing our focus to Spain or Italy. We have never been to Spain but are heading to Altea (Costa Blanca North) in a couple of weeks for a week's R&R. I know my question is basically 'how long is a piece of string' but if anyone has any comments re 'best place to live' they will be appreciated. We do not want golf resorts and would prefer more Spanish but with expat facilities. We have nightmares about the 'kiss me quick' tourist/resident but hopefully they are by now a distant memory. Thank you.
