Visiting Valencia for Possible Future Move

Hello,
I conduct workshops in different parts of the world and am beginning to wind down my career. We currently live in Florida, but want to retire overseas, possibly to Spain. I've been to Barcelona & Madrid, but Valencia has really caught my eye. We are planning to visit for 2-3 months this fall. A couple of questions:
1. Where is a good place to stay where we can meet other expats?
2. Since I'm still working (8-10 weeks a year), is it possible to get a visa that lasts longer than 3 months? I have no plans to work in Spain, just use it as a base until I retire. My wife is already retired and travels with me.
Any info that you can provide would be helpful.
