I'm a US citizen planning to receive a long term Residence Non Working Visa for Spain (Visado No Lucrativo). One requirement is private health insurance. I have been investigating Mapfre's Reembolso policy because it reimburses me up to 80% if I have medical expenses outside of Spain. My agent assures me that if 1) I have the residence visa for Spain, 2) I have a valid address and rental (or purchase) agreement for a property in Spain, and 3) even if I spend several months outside of Spain, I will not have any problems with denial of coverage.
This is important to me because I plan to not purchase health insurance in the US starting 1 Jan 2020, but I plan to maintain two homes, one in the US and one in Spain, spending about even amounts of time in each. I want to feel confident that if I have a major health issue in the US, I can get treated, and reimbursed by Mapfre.
Does anyone have insights into this? How risky is it to not maintain US-based health insurance?
