Car free living

My wife and I are planning on retiring in Spain in the relatively near future. We would prefer to avoid the expense of having a car and the hassle of reacquiring a driver's license there (we're from the US). We're looking for a nice place to relocate near the coast, and were considering Altea or Denia, before it occurred to us that they might be a little too big to get around without a vehicle and may not have adequate public transportation. Any advice?

Would it be more practical to look at a nice suburb of one of the larger cities that have a good transit system (like Fuengirola)?
