Squatters on Costa del Sol

I am thinking of buying a vacation home in the Marbella/Estepona region, but am very worried about reports of the squatter problem, which seemed to be limited to the Barcelona region, now gaining momentum there. I would like to hear from anyone who owns property which is left empty for some of the year in this area, and to hear if the Okupa movement is a concern or not. I have read some worrying reports in the press about extortion and organised crime being involved, so I would be very grateful for any feedback/local information. Thank you.
