Abogados or Do-It-Yourself?

Please share your experiences in obtaining a non-lucrative visa. I’m deciding whether to try on my own or hire a rep in Spain. I’ll be using the San Francisco, Ca, USA consulate and I speak Spanish, but probably not “legalese.” I’ve read that each consulate emphasizes different issues and qualifications. Has anyone experienced unusual/unexpected questions or requests for documentation? Has your rep provided additional services? For example: guidance on renting or buying a home to help meet the 6 month residency requirements? Thanks in advance
