Work Permits in Switzerland

I have a contract with an international Swiss-based company to work for them in Zurich. (I currently live in California.) The contract is contingent upon obtaining a work permit, and the company is handing the application for me. They tell me they have completed all of the necessary preliminaries, e.g., interviewing Swiss citizens to try to fill the job, etc., and that the work permit is generally straightforward but that it is not a sure thing. My question is: does anyone know just how sure obtaining a permit is in this case? And how long does it take? I've been told up to 60 days.
Thanks.
Nicholas
