I have a question related to traffic offenses and the subsequent fines In Amsterdam. Basically I was using a scooter of my roommate (I have a full UK Driving licence). The scooter is not in great shape and I was worried that it may not be road legal. He assured me it was and told me that he had been pulled over numerous times and told that it was fine. I therefore went out to one evening to pick up some things for him (he has broken his arm). I was pulled over by the Polite and told that the bike was not road legal. They impounded the bike and took my details. I did not have my home address and so gave the address of my office. The Polite have called and told me that I must pay the impound charges and collect the bike which I simply cannot afford. My office have told me if I do not pay the police, then they will deduct the money from my wages, which again, I cannot afford. My roommate does not care either way as he has a new scooter. Is there no way around this? it is not even my vehicle and is registered in the name of my roommate. Can they not chase him down for this?
Have the Police got the right, with only my name and work address to force my employers to pay these charges out of my wages? Or should they be contacting the registered owner of the vehicle? I would be so appreciative of anybody that has an idea of how the Dutch legal system works with regards to this kind of thing.
