Dogs in Milan

I'm moving to Milan this summer for a year or two for my job. Is Milan dog friendly or will it be difficult bring my dob, find a rental that allows dogs, etc.? How about when I travel... are there boarding facilities? dog sitting services? I could leave him with my sister while I'm in Italy, but if possible I would be much happier having him come with me. He's a 7 year old, 35 pound mutt -- very friendly and easy to take places.
