Thanks for you post about Paraguay:.as you said Atyra and other nearly place like Caacupe or Piribebuy are good place to live.

I am retired from the US military, and live in Paraguay. I bought a house with 3 hectares of land in the state of Cordillera near the town of Atyra. This is a lightly populated area, but close to the city of Caacupe. I had several milk cows, pigs, chickens and a garden, with an employee to tend to it all. For me, this is a great place to retire to. Quiet, extremely safe, clean air, water, fresh produce and meat, complete freedom of action with regard to my property. And only 40 minutes away from the capitol. Due to the birth of my son, my wife and I now reside in Asuncion, and have rented the farm out. Parts of Asuncion like Carmelitas can be nice, but it is a city after all. Everyday I miss the tranquility of Atyra.

I can understand the concern about safety here, but a lot of us who live here believe that perhaps some of the scares are manufactured. Name a major city in North America that doesn't have a bad part of town that you don't want to walk alone in at night.
Much of the heightened security around the houses is overblown, and is a showy way of saying that you have more important items to protect than your neighbours do. One neighbour puts up a fence, the next puts up a wall, the next installs a security guard, and on and on...
But crime rates here are no worse than any major city throughout the LATAM countries.
And YES, living in Centro is not ideal for a retiree, but living in Nuevo Centro (Villa Morra, Carmelitas) is just fine! Seriously, I've visited and lived in cities that were far less safe than Asuncion.
As for quiet... that's debatable. Fireworks after certain football games, cars blasting regaton beats, and the loudspeaker chipa guy that tours the neighbourhoods daily are not that quiet at all. ;)

It would depend upon what parts of the city you're in. There are areas which are much safer due largely to security. Yes, security is a big business here in PY. Due diligence is most certainly in your interest. Be sure you inquire among local people you know who have first hand knowledge. Take care of accepting "help" from those you don't know. I've personally spent a total of over four months time here before relocating. You won't regret using caution and good judgement.

I've been to over 25 countries and spent considerable time in Asuncion and yes, it is a relatively quiet capital city and quite safe. I've walked from the port to Marical Lopez at night, long walk but safe if you avoid Plaza Uruguay.

Quietest capital? Have you EVER been there to write this? Or are you luring someone into a net? Armed robberies (often by the police itself) and attacks at night. Daily. From monday to sunday. No help to be expected, or (mostly) if any, than too late.

Wow there is sooo much to type on this one. If you like"city" living then Asuncion is the place to be. It's the smallest and quietest capital city you will ever visit. Would love to help you out more let us know what you might need
