Weather: Edinburgh's climate is temperate maritime, with cool, often wet winters and mild summers; rain is frequent throughout the year, and winter temperatures rarely drop far below freezing.

Edinburgh's skyline rises in tiers of stone and slate, dominated by the volcanic crag that holds its castle. The city sprawls across seven hills in Scotland's southeast, a landscape that forces architecture upward and creates sudden vistas—a street corner opens onto the Firth of Forth, or a descent reveals Georgian crescents in the New Town below. Medieval closes (narrow alleyways) thread through the Old Town's upper reaches, their stone walls worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, while the New Town's rational grid of neoclassical streets and squares represents 18th-century urban planning at its most ambitious. Edinburgh functions as Scotland's capital and cultural engine: museums, galleries, theaters, and universities anchor the economy alongside finance and tourism. The annual Festival transforms the city each August into a sprawling performance venue. The surrounding landscape—green hills, coastal edges, and moorland—remains accessible within short distances, giving the city a sense of being perched between urban intensity and wild country.
