Weather: Thunder Bay experiences a subarctic climate with long, cold winters and short summers; snow is heavy and persistent from November through March, while summers are mild and brief.

Thunder Bay sits on Lake Superior's northwestern shore with a pace that feels removed from Canada's busier centers—quieter, more deliberate, shaped by long winters and a landscape carved by the Canadian Shield. The city grew from the fur trade and evolved through forestry, mining, and grain export, industries that still anchor its identity and economy. Walking through downtown you'll find independent shops, restaurants, and cultural spaces alongside the waterfront, which dominates how people experience the place. The surrounding region is genuinely wild: dense boreal forest, rocky shorelines, and water everywhere. Outdoor life here isn't aspirational—it's the default. Hiking, fishing, and paddling are woven into how residents spend their time. Lakehead University anchors the education sector, and the city functions as a regional hub for and services across Northwestern Ontario. The community has a self-reliant character, the kind that comes from being geographically isolated but deeply connected to the land.
