Calama sits in Chile's Atacama Desert at roughly 2,250 meters elevation, making it one of the driest places on Earth—yet it thrives as a major mining hub with around 150,000 residents. The city exists because of copper: massive operations in the surrounding region have built Calama into a genuine economic engine, with modern commercial districts, logistics infrastructure, and services that punch above what you'd expect in such an isolated location. The Loa River valley cuts through the desert here, providing the water that keeps the city alive in an otherwise parched landscape. Beyond the mining economy, Calama functions as the practical jumping-off point for San Pedro de Atacama, the famous oasis town about 100 kilometers south, and for tourists drawn to otherworldly desert scenery—salt flats, geysers, and volcanic peaks. The architecture mixes functional industrial buildings with residential neighborhoods; it's not a tourist destination itself, but rather a working city where you'll find decent restaurants, shops, and accommodations alongside the serious business of resource extraction.
