Ghent is a medieval city in Flanders, Belgium, where you'll notice the canals first—they're everywhere, lined with guild houses whose facades lean slightly as if gossiping across the water. The city center is compact and walkable, dominated by the soaring St. Bavo's Cathedral and ringed by cobblestone squares where locals actually sit and drink coffee, not just tourists. The Graslei waterfront, with its row of gabled buildings reflected in still water, feels like stepping into a Flemish painting, but the city itself is decidedly alive: students from Ghent University fill the bars and streets, independent shops cluster in narrow lanes, and the pace is unhurried without feeling sleepy. Bicycles outnumber cars by a wide margin. The city has a strong vegetarian food culture and a thriving arts scene, with galleries and street art tucked into unexpected corners. Unlike Bruges, which can feel frozen in amber, Ghent balances its medieval bones with genuine contemporary energy—it's a place where history isn't a museum but a living backdrop.
