Kortrijk sits at the confluence of the Leie River in West Flanders, a city where medieval towers rise above tree-lined streets and the pace feels deliberately unhurried. Walking through the center, you encounter a working city—not a museum piece—where locals move between markets, cafes, and shops with the ease of people who know their ground. The Belfry dominates the skyline, a UNESCO-listed monument that anchors centuries of civic pride. Saint Martin's Church, with its distinctive tower, anchors another corner of the old town. The city has invested in its waterfront, making the Leie a genuine gathering place rather than a forgotten edge. Kortrijk's identity is rooted in textiles and craftsmanship; that industrial heritage still shapes how the city thinks about itself. The surrounding Flanders region is flat and bicycle-friendly, with easy access to smaller towns and the countryside. Brussels lies within commuting distance by train. The city draws a mix of residents—families rooted here for generations, young professionals, and people seeking a less frenetic alternative to Antwerp or Brussels while maintaining real urban amenities.
