Siena

Country

Siena rose to prominence in the Middle Ages as a rival to Florence, and that competitive spirit shaped everything about the city—its art, its architecture, its fierce civic pride. Today, the medieval core remains largely intact, a labyrinth of brick buildings and narrow streets radiating from the Piazza del Campo, one of Europe's most distinctive public squares. The city is famous for the Palio, a bareback horse race held twice yearly that pits the city's seventeen contrade (neighborhoods) against each other in a tradition stretching back centuries. Beyond the spectacle, Siena rewards slow exploration: the Duomo with its striped marble facade, the Pinacoteca's collection of Sienese painting, the quiet corners where locals still live their daily lives. The surrounding Tuscan countryside—rolling hills, cypress groves, vineyards producing Brunello and Chianti—begins at the city walls. Siena feels less polished than Florence, less overrun, a place where the past isn't performed for tourists but genuinely inhabited.
