Lake Como

Urban   Beaches

Lake Como is often confused with Venice, but it's something entirely different—a glacial alpine lake in Lombardy, not a lagoon city. What makes Como itself is the dramatic interplay between water and mountains: steep peaks plunge directly into the lake's depths, creating a landscape that feels more Swiss than Italian. The lake stretches about 46 kilometers, with Como town anchoring the southern tip as a working city of roughly 85,000 people, not a tourist theme park. Medieval walls still ring the old center, and the Duomo sits right on the waterfront. Beyond the city, the lake's arms branch northward into narrower valleys where smaller villages cling to the shoreline—Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio—each with their own character. The water itself is the constant: ferries cross it regularly, swimmers use it in summer, and the light reflecting off it changes the mood of the entire region throughout the day. It's a place where you can hike into the mountains in the morning and be lakeside by afternoon.
