L'Aquila
CountryL'Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo region in central Italy, sits in a high mountain valley surrounded by the Gran Sasso and Sirente massifs. The city was devastated by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in 2009 that killed nearly 300 people and damaged much of its medieval and Renaissance architecture. Reconstruction has been slow and contentious, but L'Aquila's historic center—with its 99 churches, narrow cobblestone streets, and austere stone buildings—remains a testament to centuries of Abruzzese culture. Today the city is gradually reclaiming its identity as a university town and cultural hub, with students and researchers drawn to its intellectual institutions and mountain setting. The surrounding landscape offers hiking, skiing, and access to national parks. L'Aquila's position at 714 meters elevation gives it a distinctly alpine character rare in central Italy, and its relative isolation from major tourist circuits means it retains an authentic, lived-in quality.
