Visitors notice the steam rising from baths and vents, the smell of sulfur in some areas, and the constant movement of buses, cable cars, and boats linking the main sights. Even with its popularity, Hakone still feels tied to the landscape first. The mountains are always present, the weather can shift quickly, and the town’s appeal comes as much from being outdoors as from what is built there. For residents and long-stay visitors, daily life is shaped by tourism, seasonal crowds, and the practical realities of living in a mountainous resort area, but also by easy access to nature and a slower pace than nearby metropolitan areas.
