Sokcho sits on South Korea's northeast coast where mountains tumble down to the East Sea, creating a landscape that feels caught between two worlds. The pace here is unhurried—fishing boats still matter, traditional markets still pulse with energy, and the waterfront has the worn authenticity of a working port rather than a polished resort. The city serves as the gateway to Seoraksan National Park, one of Korea's most dramatic mountain ranges, which looms inland and draws hikers year-round. Downtown Sokcho has a lived-in quality: narrow streets lined with seafood restaurants, pojangmacha (street food tents), and small shops selling everything from dried squid to hiking gear. The beach culture is real but low-key, with locals and visitors mixing at Sokcho Beach and Abai Village, where traditional Korean fishing houses cluster along the water. The city functions as both a genuine community and a transit point—people come for the mountains, stay for the seafood, and leave changed by the raw beauty of the coastline.
