Tongyeong draws retirees, artists, and families seeking a slower pace along South Korea's southern coast. The city has evolved from a fishing village into a cultural hub, anchored by its working harbor and thriving seafood markets. Visitors and residents navigate steep hillside neighborhoods where traditional hanok houses sit alongside modern apartments, connected by narrow staircases and winding streets that open onto sudden water views. The waterfront pulses with energy—fishing boats unload their catch, restaurants grill squid and octopus, and ferries depart for nearby islands. Tongyeong's identity remains tied to the sea; many who settle here come for the maritime lifestyle, the abundance of fresh seafood, and access to island-hopping adventures. The city hosts an annual film festival and maintains a reputation as an arts destination, drawing creative professionals and retirees from Seoul and Busan seeking community without urban density.
