Lantau also has a strong spiritual and recreational identity. Visitors and residents alike head to Po Lin Monastery, the Tian Tan Buddha, and the network of hiking routes that cut across the hills and connect viewpoints, villages, and coastal paths. Traditional village life still survives in pockets, especially in older settlements where stilt houses, small farms, and fishing traditions remain visible. What makes Lantau distinctive is the contrast: it is both gateway and retreat, a place where global transport infrastructure, pilgrimage sites, and outdoor escape all occupy the same island. For people living there, that means daily life can swing from airport-adjacent convenience to quiet, almost rural isolation in a matter of minutes.
