Merzouga is a small settlement in southeastern Morocco, sitting at the edge of the Erg Chebbi, one of the Sahara's most dramatic sand seas. Merzouga sits near the Algerian border in the Tafilalt region, historically a crossroads for trans-Saharan trade routes. The nearby Ifrane National Park and the Ziz River valley offer alternative landscapes, but the dunes dominate the experience and the economy. Accommodation ranges from basic to comfortable, and local guides and camel herders form the backbone of the service economy. The town has no major historical monuments or urban infrastructure—it exists almost entirely as a gateway to the desert itself.
