Weather: Moquegua experiences a dry desert climate with cool to mild temperatures year-round due to its Andean elevation, with minimal rainfall and significant temperature swings between day and night.

Moquegua sits in southern Peru's Andes foothills, a regional capital where mining engineers, agricultural workers, and families seeking affordable Andean living have built a modest but functional city. The elevation brings cooler temperatures than Peru's coast, and the surrounding desert and mountain terrain shapes daily life—water scarcity influences everything from agriculture to urban planning. Colonial-era plazas and churches anchor the downtown, though the city wears its utilitarian character openly: it's a working place, not a tourist destination. The regional economy depends heavily on copper and other mineral extraction in nearby operations, alongside small-scale farming in the valleys that feed local markets. Moquegua lacks the infrastructure or international polish of Lima or Arequipa, but that's precisely why people choose it—lower costs, slower pace, and genuine connection to Peruvian provincial life. The city serves as a practical hub for accessing the surrounding region's archaeological sites and mountain landscapes, and regional highways connect it to other southern Peruvian cities, though travel times can be substantial.
