Baixa

Baixa is Lisbon's historic downtown, a grid of narrow streets rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake in rational Pombaline style. Yellow trams rattle down Rua Augusta toward the Tagus; storefronts mix tourist-facing cafés with old-school hardware shops and family-run restaurants that have occupied the same corner for decades. The neighborhood draws a transient mix—tourists, office workers, students, and a growing number of remote workers who've claimed the quieter side streets. Terreiro do Paço opens onto the river; the Baixa's eastern edge feels more lived-in, less performed. Rents have climbed sharply in the last five years, but you can still find locals in the backstreets.
